In 1997, Austin Smiles established The Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology at The University of Texas at Austin. This endowment allows for graduate students in speech-language pathology in The College of Communication who have proficiency in Spanish to accompany Austin Smiles on their medical missions. On the medical missions, the graduate students work closely with the professional speech pathologist in designing the appropriate curriculum and exercises for the cleft patients and work closely with the family to train them in assisting the child.
